Bubble economics!

Home alone

Spent 12 yrs mostly at home and working like a slave on the net in English and everyone had forgotten me in my native Athens, Greece.

Others became VIPs.

Four freedoms:

Whip them hard sir!

"And when after years my schoolfellows who had won prizes and distinction for writing such beautiful Latin poetry and pithy Greek epigrams had come down again to common English, to earn their living or make their way, I did not feel myself at any disadvantage.

Naturally I am biased in favour of boys learning English.

I would make them all learn English: and then I would let the clever ones learn Latin as an honour, and Greek as a treat.

But the only thing I would whip them for would be for not knowing English. I would whip them hard for that."

Whip them hard sir for not reading npthinking enough!

Άνδρα μοι ένεπε μούσα, πολύτροπον, ως μάλα πόλλα πλάχθη επί γυναικός ιερόν πτολίεθρον έπεσεν...

It's all Greek to me?

US English, UK English and Aussie English spoken.

Watch SpanEnglish.

Moving forward.

IGC

We must build a kind of United States of Europe.

The structure of the United States of Europe, if well and truly built, will be such as to make the material strength of a single state less important..

If at first all the States of Europe are not willing or able to join the Union, we must nevertheless proceed to assemble and combine those who will and those who can.

Full CV available and briefings on the strategic advantages and well as issues in biz Greece.
US, UK and Aussie EN spoken. Global EN too.

I have scouted locations for other biz activities in the UK, France, NL, Italy, Lux, Bulgaria, Poland, TK, Georgia and Germany in 2012-2014 (on my own expenses, an investment of mine).

Brussels and Belgium you know. Europe are the people of this continent, united colors of Europe.

I do not post photos of people etc of course. People want privacy in Europe. Not like the US or the UK.

They are all in my head. Not just names or pals, but people I have evaluated as skills and ethos in many ways all those years in Europe (1986-present). Eg the people I met last night while walking around Athens 11pm to 7am today (local time).

References available of course. Especially re character (ie ethos).

Dear CEO

Dear CEO,

A wise woman from a village in Fokida, Greece (Google Map it) who met me in 1999 exclaimed to her grand daughter "if this man's dad was still alive this man would be a VIP".

Demothenes Panayotopoulos 1914- June 10, 1982.
NTUA '43

A great noble man.

I'm not a VIP and that's OK! But I know a thing or two about Europe and the world and of course my dad's Greece.

Americans, Russians, Koreans, Chinese, Germans, Dutch CEOs et al, come locate your production and/or CRM facilities in my dad's country.

@locateinGreece @locateintheEU
My dad's Greece.
At the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. And inside the EU/EEA single market.

And I will take you through the maze of Greece and the EU.
BUSINESSEUROPE Permanent Delegate 1991-1994

Eg, almost everyone in Greece speaks English. Even 85 y.o ladies.
Oui, da, ja!
Amazing country. And price competitive in salaries.
Great human capital in Greece.

2017 Greece is global. Real Greeks are cosmo-citizens. You just have to know how to treat them.
Ask the CEOs of multinational companies that have. I can put you in touch.

Best regards,

Nick Panayotopoulos

Apocalypse Now

"You are a soldier, you are capable of making war and making love".

The French woman in the French colony up the river in Vietnam.
In the uncut version of the film.

Think how it relates to 2007 and 2017 in this world and contact me for analysis if you need.

Alexandre le Grand plus Diogenes

Alexandre le Grand + Diogenes = Un vrai grec

When Alexander met Diogenes, he exclaimed:

"If I was not Alexander I would be like to be Diogenes".

Keep that thought in 2017+.

Survival of the fittest is the name of the game.

Please read what I wrote in this blog in 2001, 2003 and 2006.

News is not everything.

Analysts read the news when they are 2-3 days old.

The power of being Greek (before 2009)

Some 10 years ago I was in a global chat room.

Someone was giving me and others the run around.

So I stated:

Man, I am Greek, cut it out.

"Ah OK" he said and stopped.

Then came the 2009 Greek crisis that defamed all Greeks.

Stereotypes

People alas use stereotypes in Europe. Elsewhere too, but in Europe national ones still govern the dynamics.

I've met Guy Verhofstadt twice.

"Ah, a Dutch speaking Greek!"

"Ah an Irish speaking Greek" had exclaimed Pádraig Flynn in the early 1990s at the EU Standing Committee on Employment. He remembered and granted me an interview for Greek radio and EE magazine in 1998.

"How do you expect do find a job in the UK with a name like Panayotopoulos" told me a British journo on Twitter in 2016.

Oh well. They call it Marketing. Some is mass, some is niche. Managing stereotypes.

Doing global CRM for a multinational based in Athens, Greece.

Locate in Athens, Greece.

Paddy

Who gives a hoot about the parochial UK that always called Europe "the continent" and everything outside its borders "overseas".

And the US "the former colony".

Clegg promised free tuition before 2010 but gave it up when he worked with the Tories. His LibDems were crushed in 2015. He was not elected yesterday.

My npthinking analysis was again on the spot.
The turning point for the UK was the ToryLib alliance of 2010. Major mistake.

Plus when they dumped Charles.

Paddy Ashdown was the man.

Earth: round or flat?

For businesses, it is simply bureaucratic.

I do not think that the continental approach does the trick.

If you are a citizen of the world then you are a citizen of nowhere.

May said that if you are a citizen of the world then you are a citizen of nowhere.

I guess she forgot Socrates of Athens!

Corporates, @locateinGreece in the Eurozone at the crossroads of Asia, Europe and Africa.

Some have, global operations.

Talk to them.

Hitchhike (Douce France)

In 1979, at 17, I spent a month in summer school in Cannes, France (Lycee Carnot).

My GF at the time, 23, a Parisian, hitchhiked from Athens to Cannes (ferry boat from Patras, Greece, to Ancona, Italy).

We traveled together from Cannes to Grenoble.

We spent 7 days in a small flat on the 6th floor.

Then we hitchhiked back to Valence. She went North, to Paris.

I hiked South back to Cannes. First time ever.

Slept rough somewhere between Aix-en-Province and Marseille. Took the train from Marseille to Cannes.

Best time of my life.

My dream is to walk around this planet like people could in the past.

That's my global dream, still at 54.

MLK and RFK.

Ghettos and robohumans

There are 195 sovereign countries on this planet.

164 are members of the WTO.

28 in the EU.

3 in NAFTA, etc.

In the EU there 23+ official languages.

23+ job markets.

How many languages can a real human being speak to be able to use them (read, speak, write)? 2, 3, 4, 5?

Language may be part of one's identity but Babel was punishment not a gift.

People from large countries do not mind that too much.

But if you come from a country of 1 million or 5 or 10, you do.

The EU has 4 freedoms, one for each of the following.

- Capital
- Goods
- Services
- Human

It makes 100% sense.
Language can bring us together.

Oranje

Genes or jeans? I prefer the latter.

Made in China. 12E.

Boots: Made in China. 23E

Grey matter: Made in Greece

Value added: MIT, Northwestern and INSEAD.

The way to manage is:
Full defense, total offence, like Ajax 1971-1973.

You do an MBA to have a CEO POV not to become a CEO but the MVP for a CEO.

The Empire strikes back.

The governing dynamics

Yatch Club, Piraeus, Greece. June 7, 1994.

UNICE Presidents' Council, Greek Presidency of the Council of the EU.

With my VNO/NCW colleague (both Permanent Delegates in Brussels at the now BUSINESSEUROPE).

In 1994 I wrote in Confidential Letter (Boussias Business Information) that if Greece, 11th then in the EU12, was not careful it would wind up 26th in an EU26. Well, it is 28th in 28 since 2009.

In 1999 I told Budget magazine that Greece's Euro membership was similar to a bond the value of which would show in 10 years' time. It did. November 2009.

In 2008 I told my now wife that what people like her in the USSR went though when the system folded is comparable to what would also happen in Greece.

Well, I am telling you today that Greece is worth locating at, at the crossroads of three of the five continents of this planet.

The real Americans

My top series (2003-2012):

1. Law and Order (NY)
2. Californication
3. Two and half men
4 The Office (US)
5. Shameless (US)
6. Shameless (UK)
7. Fringe
8.Law and Order (UK)
9. NCIS
10. Entourage

Years ago Ms Manners told a Harvard site that liberals in California create an America that does not exist.

We live in that America, all over the world.

We are the real Americans.

The MIT POV

Intensive. Work and shop til you drop.

As an MIT man I never had trouble sleeping in the computer lab, a mattress or crashing on a couch at the frat.

If you need an executive who does not mind sleeping at work (ie considers the workplace his home and vice-versa) use the proper HR marketing to find him/her and me.

Workaholics eponymous. You will find many of those among Greeks and others in Greece.
That's the Greece I know.

For a Europe where everyone works

Partagez le reve pour une Europe comme les Etas-Unis. One tax system, one social security, one job market.

A union that works, not 9.5% jobless.

A union even better than the US one ever was.

United States of Europe:

My fave LibDem

My fave LibDem has been of course, Paddy Ashdown.

And never forgave the LibDems for treating Charles Kennedy the way they did. Not cool at all.

My 9 years in Tibet

On December 1, 2002, I got a phone call from the owner of the company I had been free lancing for since May 2002.

"I did not deposit your fee in the bank as arranged because I lent the money to a friend in need and do not have it".

December 25, I terminated the collaboration. Started preparing to move to London and start afresh after 8 years in my native country/job market. I did not wish to return to Brussels (1991-1995). I started reading up on global affairs/dynamics instead of EU ones.

"Tibet"

I monitored daily developments around the world. By 2005 I was ready to move. But a family member needed me in Greece.

Thus I spent 2005-2012, 9 years in total analysing the world from a flat. 3 while being a carer. An extra 4 cleaning up family red tape of 100 years and downsizing to just a few things (vagabond).

"Vagabond"

I then spent July 2012 to December 2016 vagabonding around Europe trying to find a corporate job or any job at 50+ and a "lazy and tax evading" Greek. On top of having been a "flea" (see Charles Handy's book).

Since December 2016 I'm back on the chain, gang.
Global CRM for a dynamic multinational.

If you believe in a cause, you can be a soldier or a commander in chief, the difference is not that big.
The cause is: Human Capital.

My gurus

These are some of the men I call my gurus. I've had the honor of meeting them personally, of course, over the years:

W. Chan Kim

INSEAD, 1990

Philip Kotler
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Kotler
Thanks to the Hellenic Management Association (EEDE), 1989
Did not take his class when at NU, had taken the same one at Sloan in 1984.

Manfred F.R. Kets de Vries

INSEAD, 1990

Charles Handy

Thanks to Hay Group, Athens, 2000.

Since 1999 I'm developing my own school of thinking. Evolving it every day.
"ΓΗΡΑΣΚΩ ΑΕΙ ΔΙΔΑΣΚΟΜΕΝΟΣ"

In 1999-2002 I produced management-culture.com, a resource for Greek managers and executives who dare to think.

These are my gurus. And my competition.

Dogville

Bonjour mes amis.

Hier, comme d' habitude, I worked hard. Been doing that all my life. Be it as a student, a uni student in the US and France, a sailor in the navy, a free lance consultant, a SEV man in Brussels, an ECOSOC man in Greece, a Rothmans man, an advisor to the former president of the Greek TUC, a TV and radio commentator, a dotcom entrepreneur, a Bull (1999), a carer to an 80 y.o. woman, a man alone in the maze of Greek bureaucracy, a man whose mother was thrown out of a Greek hospital in 2007 and spent 7500E per month for her in a private hospital (10/2007-1/2008), a man who took 3 rooms full of family papers and downsized them to 2 suitcases after reading each and every one, a man who managed and sold co-owned property 1982-2012.

The "idiotis" who understands both the forest and each of the trees in it.

On 4/7/2012 I gave the keys of my family flat to the new owner and took a dive into the ocean of globalization. At 50.

You have been reading my reports from the Waterworld.

Live, from the planet, it's Nick.

The global village. Not the one M. Night described.

Dogville win change.
